Infrastructure Engineer (Contract)

Location: Exeter, Devon Country: UK
 

WA Consultants is currently recruiting for a contract Infrastructure Engineer for an initial 6-month contract. The contractor will be supporting a Public Sector client and the role has been deemed by our client to fall inside of IR35.

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing platforms and associated infrastructure to support research, development and learning in the area of data science and machine learning.

The key aim of this platform is to enable collaboration between partner organisations, with the sharing of data, code and other assets in a robust, secure way. The successful applicant will explore creating such platforms using different hosts eg different cloud providers, private clusters, HPC in a reproducible, reusable way using relevant Infrastructure as Code and DevOps tools and techniques.

A key part of the work will be understanding, documenting and testing the requirements of users of these platforms, and understanding the challenges associated with creating, using and sharing environmental data sets. This role will combine elements of the infrastructure engineer, technical architect and software developer to deliver the desired outputs.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather requirements for platforms and infrastructure for TDSA (data science) projects and hackathons
  • Develop shared software environments (eg docker containers, conda environments) to support these platforms and hackathons.
  • Develop trial implementations on cloud platforms, primarily AWS and Azure, and private linux compute clusters.
  • Support testing of platforms by supporting trial projects and events
  • Put relevant and appropriate security measures in place to protect data and other assets.

Skills required:

  • Infrastructure development - ability to provision and set up compute platforms in a robust, reusable way, preferably using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) processes
  • System integration - understand about the process of integrating systems and the challenges of designing, building and testing interfaces between systems
  • Technical understanding - show an awareness of the relevant subject matter and a high-level understanding of what it involves
  • Design - Turn business problem into technical design
  • Communication - ability to communicate between technical and non-technical stakeholders, both within the organisation and TDSA stakeholders in the UK and US
  • Understand wider trends and practices and how these will impact your work, understand how your work fits into the broader strategy and historical context
  • Understand the challenges (technical and procedure) of organisations collaborating, sharing code and data, and doing so privately and securely. Be able to find solutions to these challenges.
  • Security - understand information security and the security controls that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services
  • Problem management - investigate problems in systems, processes and services, with an understanding of the level of a problem (for example, strategic, tactical or operational). Contribute to the implementation of remedies and preventative measures
  • Costing - Understand any associated costs linked to proposed solutions
